     Villa Rosa Residence
     A Boutique Hotel Garden

 A Mediterranean dream becomes reality

A word from the creator.....

Nestled in a steep north/south valley on a south facing plot, approximately  450 meters above sea Level in northern Czech Republic, this  garden is set in a cold temperate central European Mountain climate.  Not an ideal piece of land on which to recreate a garden with Mediterranean ambitions. However with a rather sheltered southern aspect, long warm, dry summers and not such severe winters anymore at these latitudes we embarked  on the  challenge.

Using   the   topography, we  landscaped the   gardens   to :

A) Fit the purpose of the Boutique hotel and allow for better access to the underground parking and create more off street parking in   the broad driveway.

B) We designed and built 400 meters of  impressive garden wall, 6ft high rendered solid walls with a decorative metal fencing to allow as much light into the garden and onto the hedging plants in order to prolong their growing period.

C) We laid out a gentle series of natural granite square pathways and patios following a subtle series of height changes, disguised using natural stone steps, horizontal granite blocks flowing from the Villa to the south of the garden.

D) We used the large natural fir trees in the center of the garden to obscure the view of the area which had been specially designed to house the rescue dogs at the very rear of the garden.

 E) We attempted to work around, enhance and recreate what we imagined could have been an original layout, keeping the view lines from the Villa pure and highlighting any  logical spot where you gaze may rest upon whilst viewing the gardens from the windows of the villa.

F) We used scented  plants, enhancing the Mediterranean/ South of the Alps feel, framing the roses and lavender in hedges of box and forming the outer boundaries with a dense combination of Laurel, Yew and  Cyprus  trees cropped  closely several times a year.  Tender oleander and different species of Washingtonia were added in  containers to enhance the  warm summer feeling for the summer months.

G)  We used ornamental spheres and pyramidal designs for the closely clipped yew and box bushes and trees in order to enhance the formal nature of the gardens and punctuate the other plantings.

h)  We tried to use local materials to match the natural environment whenever possible and materials which we had rediscovered and reused during the renovation of the Villa inside.  Bricks from glass making kilns, old original stone step blocks, etc.

I) The garden  was furnished  as if it where a 1920's summer house; lavishly with  armchairs, cushions, coffee tables and more containers of flowering  Hydrangea, Oleander and decoratively cropped box.
